Age Checking Compliance Solutions: SWL-AGEFACT

Helping retailers to encourage a greater culture of challenge throughout their stores, reducing the chances of underage sales.

Summary of Benefits:

  • Combat and reduce underage sales
  • Give staff more confidence to challenge young customers
  • Reduce the chances of costly Trading Standards fines
  • Deter young people from attempting to illegally purchase an item

A key challenge for retailers selling age-restricted products is ensuring staff are always challenging customers of a young appearance. The challenge will always be a confrontational process which some staff may feel uncomfortable with.

SWL-AGEFACT poses the question to young customers if they are old enough to buy a particular product, and captures their declarations when they respond.

Put simply, when a customer is challenged about their age, they are required to press a button on the unit to self-certify that they are old enough. This process has many benefits, for example when combining this solution with a culture of challenge that routinely requests a young person to display their ID, this will reduce the likelihood of Trading Standards fines.

SWL-AGEFACT can be a standalone, robust, portable system that can sit on the checkout desk of any business that sells age-restricted products, from convenience and department stores through to off-licences.

Alternatively, SWL-AGEFACT can be linked through to an EPoS system. This further improves the culture of challenge, as every time an age-restricted product is scanned, the EPoS terminal will request customer age declaration via SWL-AGEFACT before that item transaction can continue.

This forces the requirement to challenge customers and will ensure the process becomes embedded within your organisation.

Key Benefits:

  • Drive public awareness of age restricted products and your age checking policy through the system’s bold visual impact
  • Helps to promote a culture of challenge within your business, giving staff more support and courage to ask younger customers for ID
  • SWL-AGEFACT’s highly visible appearance helps to deter young people from attempting an illegal transaction
  • Help to reduce the threat of in-store violence following consumer backlashes to new legislation, for example increases in minimum age requirements
  • Demonstrate to your customers, local communities and organisations including Trading Standards that you’re going the extra mile to address the problem of underage purchasing
  • Demonstrate to young customers that age checking is standard practise and that underage purchasing will not be tolerated
  • Reduce the likelihood of costly fines for underage sales as you’re more likely to pass routine test purchases

"Finding a way to reduce underage sales is a common challenge for today’s retail businesses. Furthermore, through being heavily involved in our local communities we want to demonstrate that we are doing everything we can to tackle real problems including anti-social behaviour. The AgeFACT pilot is helping us visibly prove our commitment in trying new ways to care for the community. And what’s more, it really works. Externally we’re demonstrating a firm culture of challenge, and for our staff, we’re giving them more courage to question customers as to their age. In summary it’s a simple and great value way of tackling a difficult issue"
